Matching Outfits with Mini Me
My cousin and I used to ask our grandmother for matching wrappers. She would go inside her room and return with two identical ones. We’d leap with joy, thank her, and start wrapping ourselves up, pretending we were off to village events.
“Harusi tunayo, hatuna?” we’d ask, giggling, already twirling like the women we dreamed we’d become.
There was something sacred about wearing a piece of the same fabric.It was our grandmother’s quiet way of teaching us that cousins are not distant relatives. We are born of her children, and so we are one. Wrapping ourselves in the same cloth was more than play,it was a bond. A shared thread. A reminder that in our culture, family is stitched tightly together.
